September 27, 2019 (3:30pm) - September 29, 2019 (4:30pm)

Get More Info or Register Here!

This clinic is ideal for women who mountain bike regularly (10-15 miles 2-3x/week) and want to hone their skill set. Emphasis is on proper body position to suit the terrain, techniques to make single track riding safer, more fun, more efficient and increase confidence. This clinic will go over the fundamentals and specific maneuvers like wheel lifts, cornering, and switchbacks. While the skill portion is more suited for all, the on trail riding portion requires fitness enough to ride in the mountains. If you have decent bike fitness, want to dial in and learn new skills and enjoy the company of other women who ride, this is a great opportunity for you. Shanna has lots of experience teaching other women (as well as men) and continually seeks to improve her skills as a rider and instructor so you can learn better. She is also an amazing rider herself but has a relaxed, laid-back approach to shredding and teaching.

In summary, you should have a strong baseline fitness, willingness to learn and experiment all while having lots and lots of FUN!

Mulberry Meltdown Ultra Trail Running Event (6, 12, & 24 hours!)
December 7, 2019 (8am) - December 8, 2019 (8am)

Get More Info or Register Here!

This event presented by Run the Cohuttas and hosted at Mulberry Gap invites you to come test your mettle on a well-maintained 1 mile course of loopy fun through the Mulberry Gap MTB Get-A-Way property. Sounds easy? Maybe the first few times…

You’ll run by mountain brooks and across a koi pond. You’ll run through stands of hemlocks and past the smiling faces of volunteers and supporters. You’ll run past a nice, warm “barn” (hint: it’s not really a barn) serving nice, warm food. You’ll run past your tent or cabin (which you should book RIGHT NOW at www.mulberrygap.com) to access personal aid and sleep without leaving the course, and you’ll run through a MTB pump track (no, you don’t have to run the tricks...but maybe that’d be fun the first few times…please show us pictures).   You’ll also accumulate 220ft of elevation gain per loop.   OUCH The course is 90% dirt/trail. There will be small segments of gravel plus the paved area where the main buildings are at the Start/Finish. There will also be a couple of short wooden bridges so you don’t get your tootsies wet as you cross the aforementioned brooks and koi pond. :)

Giro d' Georgia Italian Road Bike Festival Ride

The inaugural Giro (formerly the Italian Road Bike Festival Ride was a great success with over 100 riders participating.  All reviews were very positive and NGMBA with Rob Anderson and Kristin Campbell and many others were able to pull off a great event and raise a funds for the chapter. A Big Thank You to all our volunteers, sponsors and participants.

Rock Armoring Clinic Nov 1 & 2, 2019

The Rock Armoring Clinic is sold out. We will have 18 participants who will learn how to rock armor from IMBA Trail Solutions. What's cool is that half the participants are USFS personnel from all over the Southeast. Please contact Andy Milton if you want to be on the waiting list

Jones Creek Dam Reroute, Jake/Bull Mtn

Another opportunity to work with a professional trail builder is occurring right now at Jones Creek Dam Trail at Jake/Bull Trail System. Mike Riter,Trail Design Specialists has been awarded the contract to build the reroute at the Jones Creek Dam Trail. SORBA is managing a grant from The National Forest Foundation by direction of the USFS. The funds for this build were donated from REI to the National Forest Foundation to be spent at Jake/Bull Mountain Trail System. This project is in collaboration with Chattahoochee Trail Horse Association, Back Country Horsemen of North Georgia, Northeast GA SORBA and SORBA.

Please contact Mike Riter, mike@traildesign.com if you want to volunteer. There are opportunities to volunteer on you own or with a group. Stay tuned for trail workday opportunities on this reroute.

Rich Mountain WMA - Cartecay Tract

NGMBA has signed a Land Use Agreement with Georgia DNR, Wildlife Division - Cartecay Tract. This is a first since the Cartecay Tract mountain bike trails inception in the early 1980's. This agreement recognizes NGMBA as the organization that maintains and develops reroutes using IMBA Trail Standards. We have engaged Keith McFadden, professional trail designer to work with the Wildlife Division officers to come up with a plan that meets the objectives of a WMA and trail users. Keith is willing to work with volunteers who want to learn more about trail design, layout and construction. We see this as a Hybrid Trail Build between a professional trail builder and volunteers.

Carters Lake, Ridgeway & Woodring Branch New Trail Project

The Carters Lake Mountain Biking Trail Project, which will add 3 more miles to Ridgeway and 11 more miles to Woodring has worked it's way through USACE approval process and is now ready for a Recreational Trail Program grant application. Carters Lake, Gilmer County and NGMBA will be working together to submit an application for this grant cycle. It does take time for this process, please be patient. We submit this fall and if we the application makes it through the first phase we will be asked to submit the next application. If all goes well, we will receive the go ahead in the fall of 2020, with two years to complete the project. This is a 80/20 grant, meaning RTP supplies 80% of the costs and the community comes up with 20%. This can be in cash, in kind donations and volunteer hours.  You can bet NGMBA will be donating cash and volunteer hours.

Aska Trail System Update

Ken Nix, trail builder extroidinaire, has generously donated his time, machine and expertise to build the new bridge at Longbranch and clean out all the rolling grade dips.  Please give him a big thank you, when you see him.

The new Fruitkof is still on track. The Blue Ridge Ranger District has submitted their decision on the Fruitkof Project to the Forest Supervisor, Betty Jewett is very supportive. We are hoping to have the final go ahead shortly.

The Fruitkof Project calls for 5miles of beginner trail, 3 miles of intermediate and 1.5 miles of expert of bike optimized trail.

IMBA Ride Center Evaluation Results

Over the Memorial Day Weekend in May, Steve Kasacek and Shane Wilson, IMBA Trail Solutions visited our area to evaluate our trails and local amenities for a mountain bike destination at the Bronze Level.  This is a designation that attracts visitors from all over the world to travel here and enjoy our trails, local restaurants, bike shops, lodging and other outdoor recreation.

Unfortunately, we were just a few points short of making the grade, but if the points we need can be acquired within the 1 year grace period, we will be awarded the designation.  The areas that we need to improve are adding more bike optimized trail, improve signage, trail maintenance all of which is attainable by August 30, 2020.

A Ride Center Designation is based on Traditional Singletrack, Bike Optimized, Gravity and Bike Park Features for all levels of ability.  We have the Traditional Singletrack, but we need more of the other categories. Here is a quote from Steve Kasacek:

" Shane and I greatly enjoyed our time in the north Georgia mountains, it is clear there is something special there and the history of riding is rich. Its also obvious that the club and local partners have been making impressive gains when it comes to developing more high quality and modern riding options. We both look forward to a continuing partnership and helping ensure Elljay offers the best destination riding possible."

To that end, the Ride Center Report was very detailed and gives us the road map to plan and build more and better trails.  NGMBA will be using this report to help guide our planning with our land managers in the future.

NGMBA Collection Notes

The NGMBA collection contains a wide assortment of products to allow you choose your individual style and fit. Size ranges are consistent throughout each collection, but garments do fit differently based on their cut, construction, and fabrics. In general, questions arise on the cut of the jerseys, as short fit is very consistent. However, the cut and fabric in cycling jerseys, do provide different fits within the same size range. The NGMBA collection is built from the Athlos Breakaway line. Breakaway is a pro fit, fitting closer to the body, while still providing a level of comfort. Breakaway also steps up a level with key upgrades in materials and chamois.

Breakaway is a pro fit, fitting closer to the body, while still providing a level of comfort. Breakaway delivers with these key feature.

  • Raglan sleeve with A-Vent mesh side-panels and underarms.

  • Flatlock stitching for smooth seams against the body.

  • Laser cut silicon grippers provide compression and reduce wind resistance

  • Upgraded Aero Boost perforated chamois deliver comfort the entire ride with Forza fabric interface

  • H2 Zero performance material with high moisture management

  • Standard collar line

  • 3 light-weight, secure, pockets

  • Full invisible low profile YKK zipper

Shells and Wind Vest:

The Athlos wind shell and vest are unisex garments in a club fit. If you prefer a tighter race cut consider sizing down. A sizing guide is listed with the product on the team store.

NGMBA Board Nominations and 2018 Reflections

NGMBA Board Nominations and 2018 Reflections

NGMBA-SORBA.png

Well it's time for me to step back and look for new leadership with our chapter.  But before we get into the nomination and election process, I would like to reflect on the accomplishments of the NGMBA for the past year.

  1. 8 miles of new trail at Talking Rock, that NGMBA helped develop by educating Southeastern Trust for Parks & Land on best practices, recommending the trail builder, contribute partial funding and help maintain.

  2.  Developed a Mountain Bike Trail concept plan for Carters Lake for Ridgeway and Woodring.  USACE is in the process of approving the plan.  When complete, Woodring will have an additional 11 miles + a pump track.  Ridgeway will have a total of 6 miles of flow trail.

  3.  Re-opened Ridgeway - constructed 2 miles of flow trail and revamped the gravity trails.

  4. Aska Trail System - Continued the Challenge Cost Share Agreement with US Forest Service in constructing the re-route on Longbranch.  New bridge to be constructed soon.  Completed the first phase of NEPA for Fruitkof new trail project.  Botanical survey is complete and we are waiting for US Forest Service to perform the Archeological survey.  Once these surveys are done, then fundraising for 8.5 miles of new trail at Fruitkof will begin with construction to follow.  Rock Armoring Clinic will be scheduled for late this year or early next year.

  5. Cartecay Bike Shop has performed many hours of maintenance at Bear Creek/Pinhotis/Mountaintown trails and hosted fun rides and events.

  6.  Mulberry Gap has hosted:

    Brutal Loop - spring (Singletracks.com)
    Drama Queen - summer
Singlespeed Smackdown - summer (Singlespeed Militia)
    Turkey Shuffle - fall
    Fireball Fiasco - winter

To date, Mulberry Gap has raised around $10k since early 2016. We have really enjoyed putting on these events and helping out our community and would love to continue growing them to see the club and trails thrive!

  7. Blue Mountain Bike hosted the Carters Lake Enduro Reloaded at Ridgeway and raised $2,600.

  8. NGMBA with the Gilmer Chamber of Commerce applied for the IMBA Ride Center Designation, hopefully to be awarded in 2019.

  9. Donated $500 to each NICA team to help support them.

  10. Initiated a public meeting between the Gilmer Commissioners and Cherokee Commissioner to tour the Blankets Creek parking facility to educate Gilmer on how investing in mountain bike parking infrastructure can benefit the community.

It is my sincere hope that the new leadership will carry this work forward and to help our community, get more people on bikes and create more trails that everyone can enjoy.
